City gate (former): inscription by order of 31 May 1927
Origin and history
The town gate of Chalencon, also known as the gate of Besse, is named after the ancient seignery of Besse, whose territory extended to the fortifications of the Barony of Chalencon. This monument, located in the department of Ardèche, marks the historic entrance of the village and bears witness to its medieval defensive past.
The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 31 May 1927, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Although the precise architectural details are not described in the sources, its inscription in the Merimée base and its location in the heart of the High Village of Chalencon underline its importance in the local historical landscape.
The city gate is part of a regional context marked by feudal rivalries and the need to protect the towns. In medieval times, fortifications like this played a key role in defending territories and controlling access, reflecting the social and military organization of local seigneuries.
