Old gate built at the entrance of the city: classification by order of 9 May 1941
Origin and history
Grancey-le-Château-Neuvelle is a medieval monument built between the 14th and 15th centuries. Situated at the entrance to the city, it bears witness to the defensive architecture of the time, designed to control access and protect the inhabitants. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 9 May 1941 underlines its heritage importance and its preservation by the municipality.
In medieval times, city gates played a strategic role in the fortified towns of Burgundy. They served as a controlled crossing point for merchants, travellers and armies, while symbolizing local power. Grancey-le-Château-Neuvelle, like other cities in the region, organized around these fortifications, reflecting a society structured by defence and commerce.
Today, the old gate remains a key part of Grancey-le-Château-Neuvelle's heritage, located in the Côte-d'Or department (21). Although its exact location is approximate (21 Route de Bourgogne), it is identified in the Merimée database under the Insee code 21304. Ownership of the municipality, its state of conservation and its accessibility to the public are not specified in the available sources.
