Origin and history
The Brugelet Gate is a defensive building built in the 15th century in the commune of Auzon, Haute-Loire. It is part of a wall built to strengthen the protection of the city, which is then vulnerable to attacks by roadmen, especially on the plain side. This southern rampart, supplemented by towers, was designed to secure a weak point of the city, already protected to the north by a castle and a enclosure.
The door is named after the Brugelet district where it is located. Its structure combines a stone wall and East corbelling tower bases, designed for defence and surveillance. Two distinct openings characterize it: a broken arch on the south side and a low arc on the north side, the latter more rudimentary but functional. These adjustments reflect an adjustment to the military needs of the time.
Originally, the gate was part of a context of tensions related to armed gangs that squashed the region after the Hundred Years' War. Its designation as historic monuments in 1997 attests to its heritage importance. Today, it bears witness to medieval defensive strategies in Auvergne and urban evolution in Auzon, from a castrum to a fortified city.
The property of the gate belongs to the municipality of Auzon. Although its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, its precise location is listed at the corner of the rue des Anciens Francs, according to cadastral data and the Merimée database.
