Origin and history

The Guillaume Gate is a neo-classical monument erected in Dijon between 1786 and 1788 by architect Jean-Philippe Maret. It replaces an ancient medieval door of the 12th century in the city walls. Originally named Porte Condé in honor of the prince of Condé, governor of Burgundy, it symbolized his authority. His bas-reliefs, carved by Claude-François Attiret, celebrate the arms of the prince and allegories of Burgundy, Minerva and History.

At the Revolution (1791), it was renamed the Arc de la Liberté and later became Porte Guillaume in the 19th century, with reference to Guillaume de Volpiano, Abbé de Saint-Bénigne. Under the Restoration (1814), a temporary plaster decoration – a winged genius holding a lily on a tank – was added for the arrival of the Earl of Artois, brother of Louis XVIII. This decor, designed by Jacques Caumont, quickly disappears under the weather. The door, however, retains its four original bas-reliefs, two of which show geniuses presenting weapons or allegorical documents.

Ranked a historic monument in 1938, the Guillaume Gate is distinguished by its doric style (bossages, triglyphs, metopes) and its curved arcade. On Darcy Square, a modern commemorative plaque (2009) recalls the link between Dijon and Thomas Jefferson, unrelated to the history of the monument. The original oak medallions and garlands, once present on the pedestals, have now disappeared.

The building illustrates the political transitions of France, moving from a princely symbol to a revolutionary monument and then to a preserved neo-classical heritage. Its architecture also reflects the influence of the Enlightenment, mixing ancient references and glorification of local elites. The gate remains a major urban landmark between Darcy Square and Liberté Street.
