Origin and history
The Porte Royale d'Auxonne is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Auxonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built between the 16th century and the 4th quarter of the 18th century, it is part of the old fortifications of the city. This monument illustrates the evolution of defensive techniques over centuries, with architectural elements characteristic of the Renaissance and classical periods. Its initial role was to control access to the city, reflecting the strategic importance of Auxonne in the region.
The Royal Gate was classified as Historic Monument by order of 28 March 1939. This classification concerns not only the gate itself, with its inner passage, but also the adjoining parts of the fortifications, the facades and roofs of the central building, as well as two pavilions adjacent to the city side, including side stairs. The adjacent ramparts, up to a round tower, are also protected. This protection reflects the heritage value of the site, both architecturally and historically.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Auxonne was a fortified city, playing a key role in the defence of Burgundy. Fortifications, including the Royal Gate, were essential to protect the inhabitants from the frequent conflicts of that time, especially during the wars of Religion or invasions. In the 18th century, with the evolution of military techniques and the reduction of threats, these works gradually lost their defensive function to become symbols of the military past of the city.
Today, the Royal Gate remains a tangible testimony of Auxonne's history. Although the practical information about his visit is not detailed in the available sources, his classification as a Historic Monument ensures his preservation. It is part of a wider heritage, including other elements of fortifications and related buildings, which together tell the urban and military history of the region.
The location of the Royal Gate is specified in the Merimée base as being on the road to Flamerans, with an approximate address at 2 Rue du Eighth Chasseur. This geographical precision allows us to situate the monument in the current urban fabric of Auxonne, while recalling its integration into a larger defensive system, now partially disappeared or transformed.
