Origin and history

La Porte Saint-Jacques is a monument located in the city of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This type of door, often integrated with city walls or fortifications, usually reflects the strategic and historical importance of medieval cities. Urban gates were used to control the entrances and exits of the inhabitants, merchants and pilgrims, while symbolizing the power and protection of the city.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, located on a major axis of pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, has long been a crossroads of cultural and commercial exchanges. Monuments such as the Porte Saint-Jacques were part of a network of fortifications designed to ensure the safety of residents and travellers. Their presence reflects the social and military organization of cities in the Middle Ages, where collective defence and flow control were essential to urban life.

Future

The Porte Saint-Jacques is one of the 71 monuments as well as 7 portions of paths have been inscribed since 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the official title of "Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France".

It is on the way to Via Podiensis, or "Voy du Puy", from Puy-en-Velay to the Basque village of Ostabat, where it joins via Turonensis and via Lemovicensis gathered shortly before.
