Origin and history
The Saint-Julien Gate, first mentioned in 1476, was rebuilt around 1480 with the fortified enclosure of La Ferté-Bernard. This military building, with two crenellated towers, mâchicoulis and defensive systems (herse, drawbridges), also incorporates openings adapted to the nascent artillery. Its architecture reflects a dual function: protection and affirmation of local power, as evidenced by its monumental decorations.
Under the old regime, the door serves as a place of collection of the grant, tax on goods, emphasizing its economic and administrative role. After the siege of 1590, it lost its military vocation and became the town hall from 1703 to 1907. Interior design was then carried out, followed in the 19th century by the addition of a staircase turret (circa 1870) and the modification of access (fixed bridge, stone vault).
As a historic monument since 1875, the Saint-Julien Gate symbolizes today the medieval heritage of La Ferté-Bernard. It marks the boundary between the historic centre and modern urban extensions, while embodying the memory of the political and architectural transformations of the city, from its defensive origin to its civic uses.
