Origin and history

The Porte Saint-Nicolas, located in Beaune, is an 18th-century town gate built between 1762 and 1770. It replaces a fortified medieval gate and is part of an urban project led by Mayor Jean-François Maufoux to modernize the ramparts. Designed by architect Nicolas Lenoir, it adopts a classic style inspired by triumphal arches, with an initial wooden portal and moat still present at its inauguration.

The construction was partly financed by Théodore Chevignard de Chavigny, governor of Beaune, who offered 4,800 pounds in 1762. The works, awarded to entrepreneur Jacques Lebrun, were supervised by Denis Lenoir, the architect's brother. A Latin inscription dedicated to Chavigny, written by Father Choutants, initially decorated the door, but was destroyed in 1792 during the Revolution, replaced by Republican currencies such as Gate of the Federation or Freedom and Equality.

In the 19th century, the door underwent major changes: the old wooden gate was replaced by an iron gate in 1844, made by the seamsmith Couturier. In 1866, the adjacent ramparts, the grant office and the doorman's house were demolished to clear the door. Ranked a historic monument in 1908, it now bears witness to Beaune's urban evolution, from a defensive function to an architectural symbol.

The gate initially became part of a larger project to transform the ramparts into walks, reflecting the aesthetic and practical aspirations of the Enlightenment. Its classic style, marked by symmetry and cutting stone, contrasts with its medieval past, illustrating the transition between a fortified city and an open city, adapted to modern needs.
