Origin and history
La Porte Saint-Sébastien is a fortified gate located in the commune of Riez, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built in the 14th century, it is part of the remains of the medieval city walls. This door, along with that of Ayguières, bears witness to the defensive architecture of the time and the strategic importance of Riez in the region.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 23 February 1921, the Porte Saint-Sébastien is now owned by the commune. It is located in the Faubourg Saint-Sébastien, near the Place des Ormeaux. Its classification also includes the Ayguières Gate, another vestige of the old fortifications of the city. These architectural elements recall the historic role of Riez as a stronghold and urban centre in the Middle Ages.
The Saint-Sébastien Gate, like other monuments in the region, illustrates the urban and military evolution of Provencal cities. Its state of conservation and classification make it a remarkable heritage, accessible to the public. The approximate location, based on GPS coordinates, places this monument in a central area of Riez, highlighting its integration into the current urban fabric.
