Origin and history

The Porte Sainte-Catherine is a square and steep tower integrated into the enclosure of the former fortifications of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. Built in the 4th quarter of the 14th century, it is distinguished by a door in the middle of the hanger and a curved window of the 15th century, although its crucifixes have disappeared. A small ogival cross adorns the second floor, reflecting its medieval defensive style.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 22 August 1949, this gate, also known as Tower of the Gate, marks the city's urban history. Its current location, between Fachadour Boulevard and Rodolphe de Turenne Boulevard, reflects its past role in protecting the city. Sources mention an approximate location (accuracy noted 5/10), without details of its current accessibility.

Medieval fortifications, like this one, illustrated the need to defend cities in the lower Middle Ages. Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, then under the influence of the Limousin, enjoyed a strategic position near the Dordogne, a commercial and military axis. These ramparts were also used to control the flow of people and goods, strengthening the local authority.
