Origin and history

The darse of Villefranche-sur-Mer, located between Nice and Monaco, was from the 16th century the strategic port of the Duchy of Savoie, then of the Kingdom of Sardinia. His development began under Emmanuel-Philibert (1553-1580) to fight barbaric piracy, with the construction of a citadel (Saint Elme) and a first pier in 1539. The natural harbour, protected by cliffs, offered an ideal shelter for commercial and military fleets in the Mediterranean, serving as a relay between Genoa and Marseille.

In the 17th century, the port became a royal arsenal with the creation of dedicated infrastructures: the "form of the galleys" (1730), unique in the Mediterranean with its 62 meters covered basin, the ropery (1772) 165 meters long, and military vaults (1719) to store masts and oars. A mosque for Turkish galerians, built in 1725 at the end of the pier, was destroyed by a storm in 1773. The site also housed a lazaret (1669) for the quarantine, a prison hospital for 200 convicts (1769), and a forge overhanged by a typically Piedmontian spiral chimney.

The port reached its peak under the kings of Sardinia, with the construction of frigates like the San Vittorio (1776), gradually replacing the galleys. He was occupied by the Franco-Spanish (1744-1749) and then by the Revolutionaries (1792), and lost his military role after 1815. In the 19th century, the Darse hosted a Russian squadron and became a scientific place with the creation of the ocean observatory (1884). Ranked a Historic Monument in 1991, the site preserves unique remains: bronze rings with the arms of Savoy (1727), chapel of the galerians, and grilles with the coat of arms of the Order of Saints-Maurice and Lazare.

Today, the Darse combines heritage and modern activities: marina, traditional shipyards (Pasqui, Masnata), and base for underwater archaeological excavations. The Association for the Protection of Maritime Heritage of Villefranche (ASPMV, founded in 1995) values this historic place, where also remains wrecks like the Genoese caraque Lomellina (1516) or the Danish ship Santa Dorothea (1693).
