Origin and history
The Fouras Regional Museum is located in the semaphore of Fort Vauban, an ancient fortress controlling the Charente estuary. Created in 1956 by the Association of Friends of the Museum, it underwent a major transformation in 2005, notably on the third floor of the dungeon. Labeled Musée de France in 2004, he established himself as a departmental and regional cultural centre, with enriched collections and an educational opening to schools.
The museum revolves around five main themes: fine arts, graphic arts, ethnology, history and maritime traditions. Its 600 m2 of permanent exhibitions, spread over three floors, explore the evolution of the Fouras peninsula, the marine fauna, ship's models and historical costumes. The first floor traces local history, the second deals with coastal biodiversity, while the third highlights maritime know-how and extra-European civilizations.
In 2006, the museum strengthened its regional dimension with a focus on collections preservation, heritage enhancement and cultural animation. A documentary film, Fouras 1900, produced in 2008 in collaboration with the Société Le Semaphore, illustrates the seaside life at the Belle Époque from a collection of 1,500 old postcards. The museum also houses a collection of 1,500 books, accessible online, and organizes temporary exhibitions.
Managed by a voluntary association, the museum is part of a network of museums in Poitou-Charentes, while remaining anchored in its historic site: Fort Vauban, symbol of coastal defence under Louis XIV. Its collections, ranging from Gallo-Roman archaeology to contemporary arts, reflect the links between the Charente-Maritime, the ocean and distant cultures, via African and oceanic objects.
