The remaining barracks of the Siedlung, on its original parcel, in full (cad. 18 242 to 244, 262, cf. plan annexed to the decree): inscription by order of 24 October 2012

Origin and history

The remaining building of the Siedlung is a historic monument located in Marckolsheim, in the department of Lower Rhine, in the Greater East Region. This wooden building is part of an old temporary town composed of sixty barracks, built as part of a Germanization policy introduced in 1941. The Siedlung aimed to reorganize the local rural community socially, combining functionalist, hygienist and regionalist principles. Today, only two of these barracks remain, witnesses to this historical period marked by occupation and the social transformations imposed.

The Cité Paysanne, of which the Siedlung was part, was structured around three types of construction: agricultural farms, block houses and outbuildings, and community wooden barracks. The latter provided shelter for the collective life of the inhabitants, reflecting a planned and centralized social organization. The still standing hut, registered as historical monuments since 2012, is fully protected, including its original parcel, as evidenced by the decree of 24 October 2012.

This monument illustrates a dark page of Alsatian history, where architecture and urban planning were used as tools for cultural control and assimilation. The location of the barracks, rue du Rhin in Marckolsheim, also recalls the strategic geographical context of this border region, often at the heart of conflicts and exchanges between France and Germany. The preservation of this vestige offers a material testimony of the policies of occupation and their impact on local populations.

The Siedlungs de Marckolsheim is part of a broader set of urban and rural transformations carried out under German occupation. These temporary cities, designed to be functional and ephemeral, were to facilitate the transition to a new imposed social and economic model. Their almost total disappearance makes the few remaining buildings, like this building, all the more valuable for collective memory. The inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for what it represents in terms of social and political history.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight the exceptional character of this vestige. The accuracy of its location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), nevertheless allows to locate the monument at the following address: 1 Route du Rhin, 67390 Marckolsheim. This building, with its original setting, offers a concrete example of architectural achievements related to Germanization policies, while posing the question of preserving the physical traces of periods of conflict and occupation.
