Prehistoric replacement of the barred spur (Box B 114): by order of 24 October 1967

Origin and history

The prehistoric rampart of La Groutte is an archaeological site located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Cher (region Centre-Val de Loire). This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments by decree of 24 October 1967, corresponds to a barred spur, a form of fortification typical of the Protohistory. Its precise location, although noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), remains approximate, with an address referenced as "1 Les Fours à Chaux".

The site is now owned by the municipality of La Groutte. Barred spurs, such as La Groutte's, were defensive works built to protect communities during Protohistory. These structures generally consisted of a rampart across a rocky spur, exploiting natural relief to strengthen defence.

In the regional context of the Centre-Val de Loire, these fortifications could serve as temporary refuges or strategic checkpoints for local populations. Their presence illustrates the social organization and the security needs of societies of the time, marked by tensions or exchanges between human groups. No specific information on manufacturers or events related to this rampart is available from the sources consulted.
