Origin and history
The ramparts of La Charité-sur-Loire, classified as Historic Monument by decree of 17 November 1937, date from the 4th quarter of the 14th century. These vestiges reflect a period of defensive reinforcement, typical of medieval cities seeking to protect themselves from conflicts and looting. Their location, near the Loire, made it a strategic point for controlling river and land exchanges.
Charité-sur-Loire, part of the Nièvre department (code Insee 58059), was an important place of passage, marked by intense religious and commercial activity. The ramparts, now owned by the municipality, reflect the military architecture of the period, with elements adapted to medieval siege techniques. Their present state, though partial, allows us to study methods of construction and defensive urban planning in Burgundy at the end of the Middle Ages.
The 1937 ranking underscores their heritage value, while raising the question of their preservation in the face of modern challenges. Available data (in particular via Monumentum and the Merimée database) indicate an approximate location around the Rue de la Montagne, but cartographic accuracy remains limited (level 6/10 depending on the sources). No information is provided on their current accessibility or tourist use.
