The two courts sitting on the rock, west of the city; the advance and the entrance gate called the Pourtaou; the dwellings practiced in the rock for the guard and defense of the Pourtaou; the stairway that served the upper parts: classification by decree of 9 June 1904
Origin and history
The ramparts of the Baux-de-Provence constitute a medieval fortified complex located on a rocky spur, characteristic of the perched villages of Provence. Their architecture incorporates natural elements, such as troglodytic dwellings dug into the rock to house the guards, as well as artificial defensive structures. The site is marked by two courtyards to the west, a fortified advance called the Pourtaou, and a staircase serving the upper parts, illustrating the adaptation of the defences to a steep relief.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 9 June 1904, these ramparts testify to the strategic importance of the Baux-de-Provence in the Middle Ages. Their official protection specifically concerns the most representative parts of the defensive system, such as the front door and its associated fittings. Although the available sources do not specify the exact period of their construction, their style and integration into the village suggest a medieval origin, reflecting the challenges of territorial control and security in this Provençal region.
The location of the ramparts, near the former town hall and the village church (5151 Church Street), underscores their central role in the historical urban organization. Their state of conservation and their heritage classification make it today an emblematic site, open to visit in the wider village of Les Baux, renowned for its architectural heritage and medieval history. The current data do not allow for details of specific military uses or associated events, but their presence attests to the defensive ingenuity of local communities in the face of external threats.
