Origin and history
The ramparts of La Charité-sur-Loire constitute a defensive complex built in the 4th quarter of the 14th century, a period marked by tensions linked to the Hundred Years' War. Their construction was in response to a growing need for protection for cities on strategic river routes, such as the Loire, a major route of trade and military traffic. These fortifications, now partially preserved, bear witness to medieval construction techniques adapted to local challenges.
Classified Historic Monument by decree of 17 November 1937, these remains are the property of the commune of La Charité-sur-Loire. Their preservation reflects the heritage importance attached to medieval military works in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, a region rich in architectural heritages linked to its strategic past. The precise location of the ramparts, near the rue de la Montagne, suggests an integration into the historical urban fabric, although their present state does not allow to restore its original extent.
The site does not have detailed information about its accessibility or contemporary uses (visits, events), but its ranking attests to its historical value. The ramparts are part of a regional context where medieval fortifications played a key role, both symbolic (affirmation of local power) and practical (control of exchanges and protection of populations).
