Origin and history
The ramparts of La Roche-de-Glun date back to the 13th and 14th centuries, a period marked by the development of urban fortifications in France. These defensive works, typical of the Middle Ages, were designed to protect the inhabitants from local invasions and conflicts. Their construction reflects the strategic needs of the time, where cities built walls and fortified doors to control access and ensure their safety.
Among the elements preserved, the Porte Roussillon, inscribed as a Historical Monument by order of 7 September 1978, bears witness to medieval military architecture. This gate, now owned by the commune, illustrates the importance of fortifications in the urban organization of La Roche-de-Glun. The ramparts, although partially preserved, recall the central role of these structures in the daily life and defence of cities in the Middle Ages.
The location of the ramparts, in the department of Drôme (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is part of a territory marked by a history rich in exchanges and conflicts. At that time, villages like La Roche-de-Glun depended on their fortifications for economic survival and protection. These ramparts, now integrated into the local heritage, offer an overview of the construction techniques and geopolitical challenges of their time.
