Origin and history
The ramparts of Castellet constitute a fortified complex located in the village of the same name, in the department of Var. These remains, which include two doors still visible, bear witness to the medieval defensive architecture typical of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Their presence reflects the strategic importance of the site at a time when provençal villages had to protect themselves from local invasions or conflicts.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 6 July 1939, these ramparts are today the property of the municipality of Castellet. Their partial state of conservation, with elements such as the doors always visible, offers an overview of medieval urbanism and its evolution. Although their exact period of construction is not specified in the available sources, their style and integration into the urban fabric suggest an origin related to the period when perched villages dominated the region.
Castellet, like many Provencal villages, has developed around defensive structures designed to shelter the population and its economic activities, mainly agricultural and artisanal. The ramparts played a central role in social organization, serving both as a protection and as a symbol of local power. Their presence today contributes to the heritage attraction of the village, while recalling its medieval history.
