Origin and history

The Bouconville-Vauclair trench network is a collection of military remains located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Aisne (Hauts-de-France). These trenches, dug during the 1st quarter of the 20th century, constitute a fossilized battlefield, preserved in an undergrowth. They illustrate the defensive organization established during the First World War, particularly during the fierce fighting that took place between April and September 1917, during which time this area was the scene of particularly deadly confrontations.

The site consists of four types of remarkably preserved remains: trench networks, large number of shell holes, a concrete shelter probably intended for a German artillery piece, and a tunnel with partially filled galleries. These rare and well-preserved elements provide concrete evidence of the conditions of war and military strategies of the time. Their historic value was recognized by an inscription on 23 November 1999.

The precise location of the site is indicated as being near La Journette, in the commune of Bouconville-Vauclair. Although access and conditions of visit are not detailed in the sources, the site is identified as an important place of memory, reflecting the intensity of the fighting that took place there. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (level 5 out of 10), according to available data.
