Origin and history
Château du Mas is a medieval building located in the commune of Teillet-Argenty, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 15th century, it represents a typical example of the castral architecture of this period, with a central house body surrounded by four corner towers. Although partially in ruins, its structure still bears witness to its historical importance and its defensive or residential role at the time.
The monument was recognized for its heritage value and listed as historic monuments by an order of March 11, 1935. This official protection underscores its architectural and historical interest, although available sources do not specify the details of its occupation or owners over the centuries. The current vestiges allow us to imagine its spatial organization and its integration into the local landscape.
In the 15th century, the Bourbonnais region, including Teillet-Argenty, was marked by a feudal society where castles played a central role. They served as both seigneurial residences, administrative centres and defence points. The local population lived mainly in agriculture and crafts, while the local lords exercised their authority from these fortresses. The castle of the Mas is in this context, although its specific history remains little documented in accessible sources.
