Origin and history

Rosny-Rail is a railway museum located in the former Rosny-sous-Bois railway station in Seine-Saint-Denis. It offers an immersion in the world of railways, from the late 19th century to the contemporary era. The museum is organized in a dozen thematic and chronological spaces, covering a variety of topics: railway history, track, signalling, or rolling stock. Visitors can discover old tools, mechanical signals, and even start driving with a reconstituted cabin or a ride on a service lane.

The entrance to the museum is a 1930s rural station, with its wooden window, luggage storage and a waiting room equipped with a coal stove. The exposed track has been restored from rails recovered during works, while the tools of cantoners of the early twentieth century are presented. The section dedicated to signage highlights historical equipment, such as a check-in square of the PLM company dating back to the 1860s or a Vignier switch post from Moulins-sur-Allier, entirely assembled on site.

The museum offers interactive experiences, including a driver's cabin for driving a train on a miniature network. Among the remarkable pieces are an electric accumulator locomotive, built in 1930 by AEG and used until 1990 for cargo manoeuvres at La Plaine Saint-Denis. The collections are complemented by a motor drive, modernized from a 1950s chassis, and a hand-wrapped drive, reconstituted by volunteers and owner of a world-class speed record (26,770 km/h in 1997).

Founded by enthusiasts, including members of the Noisy-le-Sec railway club, Rosny-Rail is part of an effort to preserve industrial heritage. Exposed objects, such as devices or tools, have often been saved from destruction and restored by the association. The museum also maintains links with other railway institutions, such as the Eure Valley railway or German museums, illustrating its anchoring in European conservation networks.
