Origin and history
The castle of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, today in ruins, is a historic monument classified by ministerial decree of 16 August 1921. Its remains, located in the department of Vaucluse in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, extend over a period of construction covering the ninth, eleventh, twelfth and fifteenth centuries. The building, owned by the municipality, illustrates the architectural and strategic evolution of medieval castles in Provence, although its detailed history and its possible owners or significant events are not specified in the available sources.
The location of the site at Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt (Insee code 84118) is estimated with a "passible" accuracy (note 5/10), according to the data from the Merimée database. The GPS coordinates available place the ruins near 6 La Placette, in the centre of the village. The castle, now open to the visit without the fact that the practical arrangements (times, access) are explicitly documented, is an integral part of the local heritage landscape. Its classification as a historical monument underlines its importance, although the sources do not mention its original use or the precise reasons for its ruin.
Photographs of the site, such as the one credited to Alkonyat under Creative Commons license, reveal impressive remains typical of medieval fortifications. However, the lack of details about specific construction campaigns or transformations over the centuries limits the fine understanding of its evolution. The castle is nevertheless part of a regional context marked by feudal conflicts and the structuring of seigneurial power between the Middle Ages and the end of the medieval period.
