Origin and history

The ruins of the old castle of Château-Renard, classified as Historical Monument since 1911, date from the Middle Ages. They consist mainly of an entrance door framed by two partially destroyed towers. Substructions, stripped of their stone trimmings, show subsequent reuse in local private buildings. These remains, though fragmentary, offer an overview of medieval defensive architecture in the Centre-Val de Loire region.

The site, owned by the municipality, is located at 28 Rue du Donjon in Château-Renard (Loiret). Its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allows to identify its historical location in the village. The protected elements are limited to the ruins of the castle, without mentioning modern amenities such as guided tours or accommodation. Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its heritage classification.

The re-use of the castle materials, such as cut or machine stones, illustrates a common practice in the Middle Ages and later times. These stones were used to build private homes, gradually erasing part of the original built heritage. Today, the remaining ruins remind us of the strategic importance of the castles in the region's territorial and social organization during this period.
