The ruins of the castle: inscription by decree of 9 August 1949
Origin and history
The Château de Fontenay-Isoré, located in Rateigny-Saint-Bauld (Indre-et-Loire), is a former medieval fief dating back to the 15th century. The monument, which was listed as historical monuments on August 9, 1949, was originally a rectangular fortress surrounded by moat, with at least four corner towers. The main access was through an elevated entrance above the moat, located in the middle of the south side. The current remains reveal architectural elements typical of the 15th and 16th centuries, such as low arched vaults and traces of warhead crosses.
The structure of the castle suggests a complex defensive and residential organization. The south building retains a vaulted basement, while ripples on the north face of the existing buildings indicate the ancient presence of a large hall connecting them to the northeast tower. The site, which is historically part of the Isoré Tower and the Sennevières Castle, illustrates the military and seigneurial architecture of the Touraine in the late Middle Ages.
Today, the ruins of Fontenay-Isoré Castle, protected since 1949, offer a partial but precious testimony to the fortifications of that time. Their approximate location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allows for an on-site visit, although current practical information (opening, services) is not detailed in the available sources. The site remains a representative example of the castral heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
