Origin and history

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, located in Savoie, is an emblematic monument whose history dates back to the 6th century. According to Grégoire de Tours, its origin is linked to a legend: a woman from Maurienne would have brought back a relic of Saint John the Baptist after a pilgrimage to the East, giving the city a major religious importance. This legend, enriched over the centuries, evokes among others Tiger (or Thecle), a noble who had brought back relics, and explains the foundation of the bishopric of Maurienne under the reign of the burgeoning king Gontran (561-592), who sought to free the region from the influence of the bishop of Turin.

The present cathedral was rebuilt in the eleventh century after the destruction caused by the Saracens in the eighth and tenth centuries. Two charters, dated 1040/1041 and 1075, attest to its reconstruction in Romanesque style, including an crypt containing the relics. The crypt, rediscovered in 1958, reveals architectural elements dating back perhaps to the 7th century, rebuilt in the 11th and 14th centuries. The cathedral, with a three-nave basilical plan, was vaulted in wood, with re-used Carolingian capitals and sculptures.

In the 15th century, the cathedral underwent major transformations under the impulse of Cardinal d'Estouteville. The Romanesque vaults were replaced by wooden Gothic vaults, and the choir was elongated by a straight span ending in a five-sided apse. The chapel of Sainte-Thècle, restored by Bishop Amédée de Montmayeur, became a place of episcopal burial. The Gothic cloister, built between 1450 and 1499, joined the cathedral to the canon refectory. This work was financed by indulgences granted by John XXIII in 1410 and by royal donations.

The 17th and 18th centuries saw the addition of side chapels, including that of Saint Joseph in 1535, and the construction of a new sacristy in 1740. The porch, erected in the 18th century after the suppression of the designated cemetery, houses a monument dedicated to the first Counts of Savoy, including Humbert aux Blanches-Mains. The French Revolution partially damaged the cathedral, notably by destroying its 80-metre arrow. Restorations were undertaken in the 19th century under the direction of architect Ernesto Melano, with frescoes added by the Vicario brothers in 1831-1832.

In the 20th century, archaeological excavations (1958-1976) allowed to rediscover and restore the Romanesque crypt, filled since the 15th century. These works revealed Carolingian elements and 11th-century capitals, confirming the site's seniority. The cathedral, classified as a historic monument in 1906, now preserves a 11th century structure, Gothic stalls, and a reliquary housing three fingers of Saint John the Baptist, testimonies of its rich religious and architectural past.

The legend of the foundation of the bishopric, combining history and myths, illustrates the strategic and spiritual importance of Saint John of Maurienne. From the miraculous relic reported by an anonymous woman to the conflicts between Gontran and the bishop of Turin, to medieval reconstructions and Gothic embellishments, the cathedral embodies almost fifteen centuries of Savoyard and Christian history.
