Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montépilloy, located in the Oise (Hauts-de-France), is a complex building from three distinct construction fields. The walls and side windows of the first three spans, of primitive Gothic style, date back to the late twelfth century. The western gate and the bundles of inner columns, of late radiant style (1320–1340), bear witness to a first major transformation. The flamboyant Gothic vaults and elaborate windows of the last span, added at the beginning of the sixteenth century, complete its architectural evolution.

Founded before 1189, the parish was initially under the patronage of the chapter Notre-Dame de Senlis, before being ceded to the Abbey of Herivals around 1209. A Benedictine priory was established there, providing parish service until the Revolution. The church, dedicated to St.John the Baptist, was recast several times, with partial capitals and carved friezes remaining as remains of medieval countryside. Its furniture includes 14th century baptismal fonts, classified as a historical monument in 1912.

The western portal, described by historians as "characteristic", features a double archivot and finely worked columns, comparable to those of the chapel of Tillard (1342). Inside, carved key vaults (Agnus Dei, shields) and windows with flamboyant networks create an elegant atmosphere. The building, which was listed as a historical monument in 1971, retains a good general condition despite the demolition of its bell tower in the 20th century. Today, the church does not welcome more regular offices but remains open to the public on the first Saturday of each month.

The exterior structure, marked by massive foothills and a rare cornice in the region, reflects Burgundy influences. The partially preserved Renaissance stained glass windows and liturgical pools of the third and fourth spans highlight its historic parish use. The ground, paved with medieval burial slabs, recalls its central role in community life since the Middle Ages.

During the Revolution, the parish was attached to the diocese of Beauvais and then to the diocese of Amiens (1801–22), before joining the great parish of Saint-Riel of Senlis in 1996. The last resident priest, Father Jean Gégot, celebrated Masses there until his death in 2019, marking the end of regular services. The church, a communal property, remains a major architectural testimony of the evolution of Gothic styles in Picardia.

The historical sources, including the works of Pierre-Jean Trombetta and Dominique Vermand, underline its originality: the absence of a staircase turret, access to the attic by a hatch, and a unique mix of styles. Comparisons with buildings such as the chapel of Tillard or Notre-Dame de Paris (closure of the choir, 1318) specify its dating and its anchoring in medieval religious art.
