Origin and history
The Saint-Lys Hall, located in the centre of the Place Nationale in the municipality of the same name, is a neo-classical building built between 1842 and 1846 by architect Edmond Chambert. It is distinguished by its use of pink bricks, typical of Toulouse architecture, and by a frame incorporating metallic elements, an innovation for the time. Measuring 26 meters long by 22 meters wide, with a roof height of nearly 10 meters, it offers an interior surface of 489 m2. Its oval plan and its twenty arches in the middle, two of which are marked by triangular pediments, make it a remarkable example of 19th-century civil architecture.
The Hall was listed as historic monuments by order of 11 October 2004, thereby recognizing its heritage value. In 2014, she received full rehabilitation, preserving her condition and use for the community. Owned by the commune of Saint-Lys, it remains a central place in local life, both in its history and in its geographical position in the heart of the city. Its inclusion in the general inventory of cultural heritage (Mérimée base) and its mention in sources such as Monumentum underline its importance in the architectural landscape of the Haute-Garonne.
According to the municipality, the hall is considered the most emblematic building in Saint-Lys, reflecting both the local identity and the urban ambitions of the 19th century. Its architecture, combining tradition (pink bricks) and modernity (metal structure), illustrates the experiments of the period in the field of public construction. Today, it continues to play a social and symbolic role, while being a tangible testimony to the industrial and architectural history of the Occitan region.
