Origin and history
Sarremezan Castle, located in the eponymous village of Haute-Garonne (Occitanie), is a composite building whose oldest parts date back to the 15th century. It is characterized by an imposing polygonal tower, typical of medieval defensive architecture, as well as an adjacent wing probably contemporary. These elements, with their bays with stylistic features of the 15th century, bear witness to its origin as a fortress, although most fortifications (such as courtine) have now disappeared.
In the 18th century, or perhaps in the early 19th century, a third building was added, partially modifying the original structure. The tower houses a staircase with screws, while the west façade features a door decorated with a hooked brace, framed with pinacles, remarkable architectural detail. These additions reflect an evolution towards a more residential function, while maintaining traces of his military past. The monument has been partially protected since 1955, with the inscription of its stair tower and interior staircase.
The current remains of the Sarremezan castle thus illustrate a transition between two epochs: on the one hand, a medieval castle designed for defence, and on the other hand, a residence intended to be more comfortable in the following centuries. The approximate location and lack of detailed sources on its occupants or its precise role in local history make it difficult to fully reconstruct its past. However, its hybrid architecture makes it an interesting witness to the evolution of castles in Occitanie.
