Origin and history

Beauvoir Castle, located in Arthun in the Loire, is a 4th quarter-century building built around 1780 by the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Gabbio (or Michel dal Gabbio) for Count Antoine-Camille de Rochefort. This Louis XVI style castle replaces a 16th century house and incorporates elements such as an octagonal lantern and an oak staircase. The estate includes a house, communes, a chapel, a park with canal, cooler, kennel and wind, as well as a farm. Two historic entrances formerly linked the castle to the village, including a granite portal with double entrance (cochère and pedestrian), now partially disappeared.

In the 19th century, Count Jean-Baptiste Courtin of Neufbourg, owner from 1843, had the peak built, added a gazebo, and transformed the park to English. He introduced sequoias and built a cooler (circa 1864), a wind turbine and a kennel. Inside, a rare panoramic wallpaper, "Brazil" (1861-1862) of the Desfossé manufacture, decorates the walls. The castle, given to the municipality in 1986, was bought and restored in 1990, thus avoiding abandonment.

Beauvoir's feudal origins date back to the 14th century, where he was an aft-fief of Couzan belonging to the families of Mars, then Damascus of Varennes (15th century), Girard (17th century) and Rochefort (1731). The site preserves traces of ditches and foundations of the primitive castle. Ranked as a Historical Monument, the estate now includes the castle, park, communes, and various elements such as the wind turbine and water bodies, protected by decrees of 1990 and 2007.
