Origin and history

The castle of Bettancourt, also known as château Sainte-Marie, was built in the 18th century by François Hériot, Queen's goblet officer and local lord. It probably replaced an older building belonging to the family of Nettancourt, former lords of the place. The building, of classic style, had a stone house body with two wings and a chapel later added to the back.

In the 19th century, after the death of the Marquise de Varagne in 1879, the estate passed to the Morillot family, distant cousins. During the First World War, he was transformed into a hospital and then a convalescence house, run by the Quakers thanks to the Countess of Morillot. After the war, he became an orphanage under the name of Château Sainte-Marie.

A fire ravaged the castle on 10 July 1940, leading to a legal dispute with the Mutuelle de la Marne. In 1941 she was ordered to pay 1,297,854 francs to the then owner, Mr Van Engelen. Today, only the more modern rear chapel remains partially, as well as traces of the 16-hectare estate, formerly bordered by the River La Chée and equipped with a court of honor with a four-row driveway of trees.
