Origin and history

The castle of Pesmes is an emblematic building located in the department of Haute-Saône, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built between the 15th and 18th centuries, it stands on a promontory overlooking the Ognon River, about 20 meters above the water level. This strategic positioning, south of the village of Pesmes, highlights its historical importance, probably linked to the monitoring and defence of the valley. The remains still visible today include medieval ramparts and basements, while the residential parts were partially redesigned in the 18th century.

The castle was listed as historical monuments by order of 30 January 1989. This protection concerns several remarkable elements: the remains of the medieval ramparts and basements, the facades and roofs of the remaining houses, as well as vaulted rooms located on the basements and basement floors. Some interior spaces, such as fireplaces, panelling and parquet floors from the 17th and 18th centuries, are also protected. The site is now shared between a communal property and a private property, with parts accessible to the public under conditions.

The sources available, including research by E. Perchet and data from the Merimée database, confirm the heritage importance of the castle. Its exact address, 17 Rue des Tanneurs in Pesmes, as well as its Insee code (70408) clearly place it in the historical landscape of Haute-Saône. Although the details of its occupants or its precise functions over the centuries are lacking, its architecture and location make it a major witness to regional history, between the Middle Ages and modern times.

In the wider context of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, castles like Pesmes often played a central role in the feudal and then seigneurial organization. They served as residences for the local nobles, administrative centres for the surrounding lands, and sometimes strong places in times of conflict. The region, marked by a rural economy and river trade, saw these buildings as symbols of power and stability. Their preservation today makes it possible to understand the social and political dynamics that shaped the territory.

The protected elements of the castle, such as adorned chimneys, panelling and vaults, reflect the evolution of architectural styles between the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment. The terrace covering one of the vaulted rooms, for example, could indicate an adaptation of the spaces to more residential or representative uses in the eighteenth century. The absence of detailed sources on owners or significant events, however, limits the precise reconstruction of its history, leaving room for assumptions based on architectural characteristics.

Finally, the castle of Pesmes is part of a wider network of historical monuments in Haute-Saône, as evidenced by the official lists of castles and protected sites of the department. Its inscription in 1989 underlines the desire to preserve a military, residential and symbolic heritage, representative of the social and architectural transformations of the region over centuries. The visits, though partial, offer an overview of this complex history, between medieval heritage and subsequent adaptations.
