Origin and history

Leyrat Castle, locally nicknamed Château de Barbe Bleue, is a ruined medieval fortress located in a loop of the river Voueize, in the commune of Chambon-sur-Voueize (Creuse). Its remains, dating from the 10th and 11th centuries, bear witness to a marked defensive architecture: walls up to 2 meters thick and a strategic position overlooking the valley of 40 meters. The north side was protected by a natural cliff, while a ditch defended the south flank. Part of the castle reportedly housed a feudal home, proof of its past occupation.

The site is surrounded by legends, including that of an underground linking the castle to the Voueize, where the corpse of a black magic fan would have been discovered. This story helped to associate the places with the mythical figure of Barbe Bleue, famous black mage. Although these stories are a matter of folklore, they illustrate the collective imagination associated with medieval ruins and their mystery.

Today, the ruins of Leyrat Castle offer an architectural testimony to the defence techniques of the early Middle Ages. Their present state makes it possible to observe the remains of a fortress designed to resist the assaults, while revealing traces of a seigneurial life. The monument is part of the Castral heritage of Creuse and New Aquitaine, alongside other medieval castles of the region.
