Origin and history

Mugnier Castle is a mansion built in the early eighteenth century, as evidenced by the 1714 vintage engraved on a pediment. Located in Frasne-le-Château, Haute-Saône department, this building illustrates the civil architecture of this period, although its interior has been largely modified, with the exception of the original staircase.

The monument has been listed as historical monuments since September 6, 1996, a recognition that protects its facades, roofs, stone staircase and wrought iron ramp. According to the sources, it was built for J.B. D'Arnoult de Fontenay in 1770, although this date contrasts with the 1714 vintage. This duality suggests separate construction or renovation phases.

The outbuildings of the castle, located on the same estate (cadastre A 407), are also protected by this inscription. Today, Mugnier Castle remains a testimony of local history and the architectural evolution of bourgeois houses in Franche-Comté, although its current use (visit, rental, accommodation) is not clearly documented in the available sources.
