Castle, including stairway in screws, floors and wall in pise (Box AB 300 to 302): inscription by order of 20 April 1989

Origin and history

The castle of Saurier, located in the municipality of the same name in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, was built against the city walls at the beginning of the sixteenth century. The building, of noble house type, is distinguished by a polygonal staircase turret and a round tower from the old rampart. Its medieval-style piercings, its ground chambranle door and its third-point arch highlight its medieval and Renaissance architectural heritage. The 17th century windows contrast with the almost completely destroyed interiors.

The main structure of the castle includes a quadrangular house body flanked by a round tower and a stair turret. The façade, pierced by three bays of windows, bears witness to the changes made over the centuries. The building, registered with the Historic Monuments in 1989, includes protected elements such as the screw staircase, floors and a pedestal partition. Today owned by the municipality, its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.

The history of the castle is marked by its integration into urban defences, as evidenced by the remains of the ramparts. The front door, once stamped by a now extinct coat of arms, and the ground windows reflect the aristocratic status of its occupants. Despite the almost total destruction of the interiors, the exterior preserves traces of architectural transformations between the 16th and 18th centuries, offering a representative example of the noble houses of the region.
