Origin and history
The Château de Saint-Agil, located in the department of Loir-et-Cher, is a historic monument registered since 13 February 1926. It stands on the site of an ancient 13th century medieval fortress, transformed into a seigneurial residence at the end of the 15th century by Antoine de La Vove. This castle, surrounded by fifteen meters wide moat, illustrates the defensive and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages.
Originally, Saint-Agil was the seat of a seigneury under Mondoubleau, mentioned from the year one thousand. The family Le Gallais, then the family of La Vove by covenant in the 14th century, made it their residence. The castle took its present appearance between the 15th and 16th centuries, with notable modifications in the 18th century. The entrance, marked by a poterne of 1510, is a pavilion of bricks and stones flanked by mâchicoulis towers.
In 1818, the estate was acquired by the Count of Saint-Maixent. Today, it belongs to Michel Canigou and her husband, who have undertaken his restoration since 2005. The house body, although redesigned, retains ancient elements, while the moat and squared organization recall its defensive origin. The castle remains a major architectural testimony of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
The site is referenced in the Merimée base and located precisely at Saint-Agil (code Insee 41248), near Couëtron-au-Perche. Its history reflects the seigneurial and architectural evolutions of the region, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
