Origin and history

Aon Castle is a monument in the municipality of Brocas, in the department of Landes, New Aquitaine. Although its exact date of construction remains unknown, it is mentioned for the first time in the estate inventory of Peter II of Castelnau, who died in 1645. The latter allegedly built it after acquiring part of the estate from the family of Bordes-Lassalle. At that time, the Castelnau branch adopted the title of Baron de Brocas, thus marking the importance of this place for their lineage.

The castle changed its owners in 1809, becoming the property of Marie-Claude de Castelnau and her husband, Jean-François-Marie d'Aon, Baron de Hontanx. He then took the title of Baron de Brocas, thus perpetuating the link between this family and the estate. The architecture of the castle is distinguished by a main house body in the shape of a charter, accompanied by two square pavilions and a wing located to the north.

The history of the castle of Aon is closely linked to the noble families of the Landes, especially the Castelnau and the Aon, which marked its evolution by inheritances and alliances. Its architecture, typical of the seigneurial residences of the region, reflects local stylistic influences while at the same time testifying to social and family transformations throughout the centuries.
