Origin and history
Campaigno Castle, located in the town of Ligardes in Occitanie, is a monument built during the second half of the eighteenth century. This castle, whose main house body, commons, and chapel are protected, reflects the aristocratic architecture of this period. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 2013 underscores its heritage importance, especially for its facades, roofs, and decorative elements such as the wrought iron gate and gate.
The structure of the castle includes a courtyard of honour framed by buildings of communes, as well as a planted driveway leading from the departmental road to the entrance. These elements, typical of the noble residences of the eighteenth century, testify to a spatial organization designed to impress and structure domestic and social activities. The presence of a chapel within the communes also suggests a religious dimension integrated into the daily life of the estate.
At the time of its construction, the area, then integrated into the province of Gascogne, was marked by a rural society where the castles served as administrative and economic centres for the local lords. These residences played a key role in organizing the surrounding agricultural lands, while embodying the prestige and power of their owners. The castle of Campaigno is thus part of this historical context, although the available archives do not specify the identity of its original sponsors or occupants.
