Origin and history

The Château de Castilly is a 17th to 19th century residence located on the former town of Castilly, now integrated in Isigny-sur-Mer (Calvados, Normandy). It was the heart of the seigneury of Castilly, erected in 1683 for Philippe de Boran by Louis XIV. The present castle was built at that time near an old manable house, with an access driveway, moats and a lower yard.

Under the Restoration, the architect Harou-Romain enlarged and decorated the castle. In 1849, the classical park was transformed into a landscaped park by Châtelain, before being partially restored in the early twentieth century to a French-style layout. The estate, described by Arcisse de Caumont as "significant", generated an income of 40,000 francs.

The castle has been partially listed as a historical monument since 2005, protecting its facades, roofs, moats, vegetable garden and driveway. It embodies the architectural and landscape evolution of a Norman seigneury, marked by successive changes reflecting the tastes of each era.

The Marquisat de Castilly, created under Louis XIV, illustrates the rise of the provincial nobility in the seventeenth century. The castle, passed into the hands of families like the Kergorlays in the 19th century, also bears witness to the social and economic transformations of Normandy, between the Ancient Regime and the modern era.
