Origin and history

The Château de Clefmont, located in the commune of the same name in Haute-Marne (Grand Est), has its origins in the late 10th or early 11th century. Originally, it was a wooden and earth castrum, typical of medieval fortifications, built on a hill overlooking the Bassigny region. This strategic site initially housed the Counts of Bassigny, then the Lords of Clefmont, before being transmitted by marriage to a branch of the family of Choiseul in 1395. The current remains, such as the round towers or the chapel of Sainte-Catherine, bear witness to its architectural evolution, marked by major transformations in the 12th and 17th centuries.

In the 12th century, the castle turned into a stone fortress, protected by ditches carved in the rock and a drawbridge framed by two round towers. The Choiseul, in the 17th century, modernized the building in Renaissance style, piercing many windows to make it more habitable. However, a fire partially destroyed the castle the same time, leaving traces still visible. The current building, built in 1701 by the Marquis du Châtelet in the courtyard, coexists with older elements, such as the renovated 16th century house. Ranked a historic monument in 1928, the castle remains a private property, preserving iconic frescoes and defensive structures.

Abandoned as a seigneurial residence from the end of the 17th century, the Château de Clefmont illustrates the architectural and social changes of the local nobility. Its history reflects family alliances (Choiseul, Châtelet) and successive adaptations, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Today, its vestiges — brazed towers, chapel and lodges — offer a tangible testimony of nearly a thousand years of history, although the oldest elements have disappeared. The commune of Clefmont, linked to this heritage, also preserves a church and other historical monuments classified in the Haute-Marne.
