Origin and history

Clerdan Castle is a 19th-century building located in the commune of Romans, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This body of square-planed houses, with a prominent pavilion in the middle of the hangar, dominates the Chalaronne valley, offering strategic views of the surrounding area. Its architecture reflects the stylistic influences of its time, although few technical details are available.

According to the sources, the castle was built in the mid-19th century by the Count of La Rochette. However, information on its history, occupants or specific role remains limited, with insufficient reference available. The monument is part of the landscape of Ain castles, typical of an area marked by aristocratic and rural history.

Like many castles built during this period in France, the castle of Clerdan could have served as a seigneurial residence or symbol of prestige for its sponsor. The 19th century castles, often inspired by past architectural styles such as the neo-Gothic or neo-classical, reflected the social and cultural aspirations of their owners, while integrating into a territory undergoing economic and industrial change.
