Origin and history

The castle of Labécède-Lauragais, located in the eponymous village of the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region, dates from the first half of the seventeenth century. This monument is now mainly known for its portal, the only remaining part of the old castle. This portal, which was listed as a historical monument in 1948, is distinguished by its arch in the middle of a hanger framed by pilasters with ironic bosses and capitals, reflecting the classical architecture of the era.

The seigneury of Labécède was divided between the king of France, who owned a quarter, and local lords, who held the remaining three quarters. This division illustrates the feudal structures still in place in the region in the 17th century, where powers were divided between the crown and noble families. The gate, with its decorative elements such as simple oves and flat frieze, bears witness to the prestige that the local lords wanted to display through their residence.

Today, the castle no longer exists as a complete structure, and only the gate, located 1 Rue du Château in Labécède-Lauragais, recalls its past existence. Its listing of historic monuments in 1948 underscores its heritage importance, although the vantals, initially present, are not included in this protection. The accuracy of its location remains approximate, with a note of 5/10 depending on available sources, indicating an imperfect knowledge of its exact location in the current archives.
