Origin and history

The castle of Lagnes, located in the eponymous village of Vaucluse in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, is a monument whose origins date back to the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with subsequent modifications to the seventeenth century. Its current structures reflect this long architectural evolution, combining medieval defensive elements and more recent adaptations. The site includes a former chapel of Saint-Antoine, facades and roofs of the southern house, as well as the ruins of a dungeon and walls of enclosure, all protected by an inscription to the Historical Monuments in 1978.

The remains of the castle of Lagnes illustrate the strategic importance of fortresses in Provence during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. These buildings served as both a refuge for local people, a symbol of seigneurial power, and an administrative or economic centre, as evidenced by the presence of an oil mill near the enclosure. The region, marked by trade and territorial conflicts, saw these castles play a key role in the social organisation and protection of surrounding agricultural land.

The official protection of the castle in 1978 allowed to preserve major architectural elements, such as the gates of the walls of the enclosure or the ruins of the north castle. These remains, although partially degraded, provide an overview of the construction techniques and successive uses of the site, from its initial military function to residential or utility redevelopments in later periods. The location of the castle, in the heart of the village of Lagnes, highlights its anchoring in the local heritage and its historical role in the development of the commune.
