Origin and history

Mareuil Castle, located in Mareuil-sur-Belle in the Dordogne department, is an emblematic monument of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is a plain fort, built in the 15th century on the foundations of an earlier building destroyed during the Hundred Years War. This castle, one of the four baronies of the Périgord, was rebuilt by Geoffroy de Mareuil as a flamboyant Gothic pleasure residence. It was burned during the wars of religion, then abandoned before being restored in the 17th century by the Talleyrand-Périgord family.

In 1883, the castle was bequeathed to the Chalais Hospital and turned into a farm. In 1963, he was bought by the Dukes of Montebello, descendants of Marshal Jean Lannes, who restored him and rearranged him. Ranked a historic monument in 1862, it now houses a family collection dedicated to Napoleon I and the First Empire. Its architecture includes defensive elements such as moat, towers and a dungeon, as well as a flamboyant Gothic chapel.

The castle is partially open to the public, with guided tours offered from June to September. Accessible areas include reception rooms, chapel, dungeon and courtyards. Although located away from the large tourist routes of the Périgord, it attracts a moderate influx. Renovation is planned after 2024 due to financial constraints.

Mareuil Castle is also linked to the cultural history of the region, notably through the troubadour Arnault de Mareuil, author of the 12th century Salvations of Love. Its triangular plan, flanked by towers and surrounded by ditches, reflects its role both defensive and residential. The interiors, panelled and decorated with 17th century chimneys, bear witness to architectural and decorative developments over the centuries.

Today, the castle remains inhabited by the Montebello family, which preserves its historical heritage while sharing it with the public. The guided tour, often provided by Benoît de Montebello, allows you to discover the history of the place, its architecture and the collections it houses. Despite its distance from major tourist routes, it is an important testimony to the feudal and aristocratic history of the Périgord.
