Origin and history
The Château de Palmont is located in the commune of Fontanges, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. His story began in 1480, when Guy de Fontanges erected a dungeon on the remains of an older castle. This rectangular dungeon is accompanied by a circular staircase tower to the east and a tower partially engaged to the northeast. Each floor includes a main room and an adjacent room, with decorative woodwork on the second level.
In the 19th century, a small castle was built against the dungeon, partially changing the original appearance of the site. The facades and roofs of the dungeon have been protected as historic monuments since December 22, 1970, thereby recognizing their heritage value. The castle illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
The site is referenced in architectural bases like Mérimée, and it is one of the historical monuments of the Cantal. Its dungeon, characteristic of the defensive constructions of the late 15th century, bears witness to the techniques of the era while integrating comfort elements such as interior woodwork.
