Origin and history
The castle of Thénières, erected in 1863 by Ernest de Boigne, replaces an ancient medieval castle of which no trace remains. Located in Ballaison in Haute-Savoie, it overlooks Lake Geneva from Mont de Boisy. Its architecture, inspired by the castle of Balmoral, reflects the romantic taste of the 19th century, with a high round tower and turrets.
In 1811 Ernest de Boigne acquired the site from Jean Lasserre, a Genevois. He had the medieval ruins razed in 1863 to build the current building, designed by architect Bruger. As early as 1893, the Boigne family sold the castle to a Lyon banker, Monsieur Côte, before he passed into the hands of the Domanges family.
In 1979, the château was bought by the Bas-Chablais intermunicipal union. After restoration, it hosts public institutions, including the Regional Centre for Continuing Training and Community Services d'Agglomeration Thonon Agglomeration. Today, it also houses the Intercommunal Centre for Social Action (CIAS).
The castle, without medieval remains, is an example of Scottish architectural pastiche. A health trail has been set up nearby for athletes, adding a modern dimension to this historic site.
