Origin and history

Vierzy Castle is a historical monument located in the municipality of Vierzy, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the fifteenth century, it is representative of the defensive and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages. Its remains, including a fortified gate and a house, illustrate its past importance in the region.

The castle belonged to noble families, especially the d'Estrées, before passing in 1749 to the Duke of Noailles, then to the princess of Chimay. These successions reflect its role in the alliances and aristocratic prestige of the Old Regime. In 1928, parts of the 15th century, such as the fortified gate and elements of the house, were listed as historical monuments, highlighting their heritage value.

The current, though partial, remains make it possible to imagine the strategic and social importance of the castle. The fortified door, the rectangular house body with its polygonal turret, and third-point arcades recall its medieval architecture. These elements, which have been protected for almost a century, offer tangible evidence of local history and the evolution of the castles in Picardia.

The castle of Vierzy is today a site whose access and uses (visits, events) are not specified in the available sources. Its partial inscription in the title of historical monuments in 1928 nevertheless guarantees the preservation of its most emblematic parts, while inviting further research to learn more about its detailed history.
