Origin and history
The castle of Sermenaz is a 19th-century building located in the department of Ain, on the town of Neyron, in the heart of the eponymous district. It was built on the remains of an ancient castle whose existence is attested from the 15th century, marking a historical continuity between medieval and modern eras. Its present structure, with ground floor, floor and slate roof, reflects the architectural cannons of its time, while its facade adorned with a column porch and a stone balcony shows a marked aesthetic concern.
The present castle succeeds a medieval fortress linked to Perceval de La Balme, local lord and squire of Philip II of Savoy in the 15th century. The latter, residing mainly at the castle of Chazey-sur-Ain, played an active role in the development of the church of Saint Didier de Neyron, where he was probably buried around 1500. The recent history of the monument is marked by a devastating fire in December 2014, which severely damaged its structure.
The former castle, prior to the 19th century, was a key element of the local heritage, associated with the family of La Balme, an influential noble lineage in the region. Although little detail remains of its original appearance, its existence attests to the strategic importance of Neyron and its surroundings during the Middle Ages. The reconstruction of the 19th century, on the other hand, is part of a period of architectural renewal and valorisation of feudal heritages by the aristocracy or rising bourgeoisie.
Today, the castle of Sermenaz embodies both a testimony of medieval history of the Ain and an example of 19th century residential architecture. Its present state, after the 2014 fire, raises questions about its preservation and restoration, in a context where the local heritage is increasingly valued for its historical and tourist interest.
