Origin and history
The Castellas de Gignac site is an emblematic monument of the medieval period, located in the municipality of Gignac, in Occitanie. Although available sources remain limited, its existence attests to a human occupation and a defensive organisation typical of this time. In the Middle Ages, fortified sites such as Castellas played a central role in protecting local populations and controlling territories.
These structures often reflected the political and military tensions of the time, while serving as gathering points for the surrounding communities. Their strategic location, often in height, allowed effective monitoring of the surroundings.
