Pierre René Orono de Sonis - Industrial owner Commander of the castle, linked to the forges.

Origin and history

Sonis Castle is an emblematic monument of Mouterhouse in the Moselle department. It was erected around 1830 in a place called Altschmelz (or Old Foundry), marking an industrial period for the region. This castle is closely linked to local metallurgical activity, reflecting the economic importance of forges at that time.

The castle was built for Pierre René Orono de Sonis, owner of the Société Anonyme des Forges et Usines de Mouterhouse. This link with the steel industry underlines the central role of industrial families in the architectural and economic development of the region in the 19th century. The site, now listed in heritage bases like Mérimée, bears witness to this industrial and social history.

Although little detailed information is available on its future development, the castle of Sonis remains a symbol of the local heritage. It illustrates the legacy of mining and metallurgical activities that shaped the landscape and identity of the country of Bitche, Moselle.
